Video Review: 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

July 30th, 2012 No comments

After enough time has passed a name starts to mean something, so just as we never expect to find a Corvette emblem on anything but a low-slung two-seater, we didn’t think we’d see the venerable Range Rover name attached to anything but a high-riding luxurious box driven by enough mechanical four-wheeling hardware to make short work of even the most demanding wilderness. But here we are raving over the newest Range Rover and, as you can see in our video review, the most exciting crossover in 2012 is anything but a box. Read more…

Video Review: 2012 BMW 128i

July 18th, 2012 No comments

BMW continues to develop great products in all classes but enthusiasts fear that in the age of turbochargers, dual-clutch transmissions, electronic driver’s aides of every kind and rapidly ballooning curb weights the ultimate driving machine perfected during the ’90s may soon be a thing of the past. Which is why we were heartened to recently find a base model 128i in our fleet. The smallest car in the BMW lineup is also the most traditional with straight forward styling and a tall greenhouse reminiscent of the legendary 2002. Under the hood is a silken 3.0-liter straight-six pushing 230 hp through a six-speed manual and out to the rear wheels. There are no buttons to adjust steering feel or suspension compliance. It’s just classic BMW-goodness that will delight the enthusiast on every drive. We speak for fans of the Ultimate Driving Machine the world over when we say: BMW, please don’t stop offering cars like this. Read more…

Video: 2012 Nissan Juke Review

April 4th, 2012 No comments

We don’t get many surprises in the AT Garage these days. By the time a vehicle is teased and then detailed down to parts numbers in a thorough press release and then bestowed with a gala auto show debut we’ve pretty much formed an opinion. Which is how we came to assume the Nissan Juke was an ity-bity engined, cramped-cabin crossover abomination that puts the ugly in really, really ugly. Turns out only the last part is true, and even then the ugly is pretty much confined to one side. So what changed our tune? You’ll have to watch to find out. Read more…

Video Review: 2011 Lexus CT 200h

March 10th, 2012 No comments

The CT 200h Hybrid is actually Lexus’ second attempt at entering the compact personal luxury hybird segment, the first being the now departed HS 250h Hybrid. Ignore the powertrain for a minute and it is easy to see that Lexus has the Audi A3 square in their sights in terms of ride, handling and interior accomodations. However, and here we go again, the Prius powertrain under the hood is an instant buzz kill. But if you desire good handling and effiecent motoring is your primary requirement, the CT 200h is for you. Click play to let us explain.  Read more…

First Drive: 2013 Toyota Prius c

Latest Addition to the Prius Family Goes Conventional

Having narrowly escaped a late February snow storm in Michigan and finding ourselves stepping off of a plane near the Atlantic beaches of lower Florida seemed like a dream come true. Certainly a trip to the beach town that curiously shares its name with a 1958 base model Chevrolet had a catch. Yes, that catch was that we were to sample Toyota’s newest and, as executives stressed, last planned member of the Prius family. While having earned a reputation in the industry as the leading hybrid, we have never been overly excited about the Toyota Prius. The Prius has managed to win over fuel misers and environmental advocates, but to say it has been generally disliked by driving enthusiasts would be a gross understatement. We were expecting that the smallest member of Toyota’s hybrid lineup, the Prius c, would be more of the same and figured our drive of the 98 hp fuel sipper would be the low point of our stint in Florida. Video Review: 2012 Toyota Highlander Limited

January 31st, 2012 No comments

Toyota’s Highlander has never been a vehicle to grab the attention of our automotive hearts. Its subdued styling and midsize packaging just doesn’t stand out in the crowd. Our all-wheel-drive test example was even painted a nondescript shade of beige. But setting out with low expectations can be good, because it’s then hard to disappoint. Read more…

Video Review: 2012 GMC Acadia Denali

December 15th, 2011 No comments

While we have always regarded the GM large crossovers as great vehicles, the fact of the matter is their class-leading days are firmly in the rear view mirror. Editor Dye discusses this while driving the most premium of the GMC grade, the Acadia Denali. It is still a great vehicle, but at the end of the day this crossover was designed in an era of hard interior plastics and, like many Americans, needs to lose a few pounds. Read more…
