2013 NAIAS: BMW 320i, M6 Gran Coupe, 4-Series Coupe Concept

January 14th, 2013

BMW used their time in the spotlight to introduce two new models (plus a very subtly updated Z4) and a thinly-disguised concept that will soon join the lineup as the newly-christened 4-Series replacement to the aging 3-Series coupes. Let’s start with the 320i that features a lower output version of the 2.0-liter turbo four we’ve enjoyed in the 328i. Here it makes 180 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque but it does net you a starting price of $33,445. Most of the usual options, including all-wheel drive will remain available and if you were expecting a fuel milage bump over the more powerful 328i you’ll be disappointed to learn they are estimating the same 23 mpg city/33 mpg highway EPA ratings. You’ll just have to take solace in the nearly $3,500 you saved when selecting this new base model.

Firmly at the other end of the performance spectrum is where the M6 Gran Coupe lives. This beautiful ‘bahn burner mates the M5 or M6 Coupe/Cabriolet powertrain with the svelte 4-door coupe body of the Gran Coupe and the result is probably the most desirable vehicle in BMW’s lineup. We simply can’t imagine anything much better than this using existing BMW parts. In person the look is pure business on the outside with massive Carbon Ceramic brakes, carbon fiber detailing and impossibly low profile tires sending the message that this is a powerful machine. The interior is equal bits gorgeous luxury and serious sport borrowing all the best bits from the M parts bin. Acceleration to 60 mph should take about 4 seconds thanks to 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. It’s safe to assume we want one of these. And so should you.

The other good news on the BMW stand was just how attractive the 4-Series Coupe Concept is. Although we don’t know anything specific about powertrains yet, the two inch longer wheelbase over the outgoing coupe makes for beautiful proportions with a long muscular hood and profile. We should see production models later this year. In the meantime things seem to be progressing very promisingly.
