2014 NAIAS: Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Concept

January 18th, 2014 No comments

Infiniti made a smart decision in rushing out a performance-tuned version of their Q50 sedan for the upcoming auto show circuit. The Eau Rouge version shown in Detroit doesn’t come with specific powertrain info other than hints that forced induction would yield more than 500 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque should it ever reach production. Turns out that’s enough to get us excited! The Q50 has damaged Infiniti’s reputation as a builder of rewarding sport sedans (The G37 of yore) due to the emphasis on drive-by-wire steering technology and other comfort-oriented technologies that dulled the car’s responses. But a seriously tuned version under the IRL subbrand could do a lot to stir up competition in the CTS-V, M5, E63 world of hot-rod sedans. An aggressive body kit and wheel/tire package along with cross drilled brake rotors are enough to set this car apart from standard Q50s even from across the show floor. We say rearrange your priorities to put driving fun back atop the list and build this car as a mea culpa to your fan base.

2014 NAIAS: Audi Allroad Shooting Brake Concept

January 18th, 2014 No comments

Audi said their Allroad Shooting Brake concept hints at a future sports car design (probably the TT) but the tech it hides is just as significant a hint. The latest version of the E-Tron powertrain uses a 2.0-liter turbo engine and a 8.8-kw battery pack, which can provide 31 miles of driving before firing up the gas engine and returning an equivalent of 124 mpge. It does this while providing 408 hp and 479 lb-ft of total system torque to all four wheels. Zero to 60 mph happens in 4.6 seconds and the top speed is 155 mph. To us it sounds like Audi might be hinting at an optional TT powertrain here. With numbers like those we’re ok with that.

2014 NAIAS: 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

January 17th, 2014 No comments

Competitor’s take note: Mercedes is getting really, really good at building luxury cars again. Oh sure they haven’t produced any junk in the last decade but a certain confidence that was embodied in every Mercedes of the 90s was dialed back as the obvious search for additional profits lead to something we hadn’t seen in any 3-pointed star before: cost cutting. But now the S-Class is the envy of the car world again and Mercedes is bringing that magic to the masses in the form of the new 2015 C-Class. The turbocharged four and six cylinder engines now power a nearly perfectly shrunken S-Class that even offers most of the flagship’s tech and luxury features. For the first time an air suspension is available as are luxuries like distronic cruise control plus steering assist, Burmester audio and even a climate control system that uses GPS to adjust before you enter a tunnel. In the hunt for efficiency engineers also reduced weight more than 200 pounds over the previous generation. Also of note is the 3-inch stretch in wheelbase that adds a bit more room to the previously tight rear seats. With an interior design drunk on details and finished as beautifully as anything costing twice as much the C-Class will find it almost easy to steal customers from the competition. Welcome back Mercedes and keep it coming.

2014 NAIAS: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250

Mercedes-Benz is enjoying strong sales growth and the CLA-Class is going to be a big driver of that. The new Benz starts around $32k and offers a fantastic amount of style inside and out, plus the brand cachet of having a 3-pointed star on the hood. But keep your expectations in check because hard plastics do make up the bulk of the center console and other minor trim pieces here and there. Credit to Mercedes for finishing the doors and dash in rich materials and spending the budget where it counts. Headroom is tight but such is the price for the stylish 4-door coupe look that is all the craze. All wheel drive is available and the 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 makes 208 hp but a respectable 258 lb-ft of torque. As a gateway drug for the Mercedes brand the CLA will be a giant success in 2014.
