The thoroughly upgraded 2013 Ram 1500 capped a decisive Awards Show season with a dominating performance in the North American Truck/Utility of the Year competition. The revised Ram utilizes an 8-speed automatic to return better performance and 25 mpg on the highway. Coupled with other enhancements like more aerodynamic styling, an available air-ride suspension, improved interior ergonomics and power lockable Rambox bedside “trunks”, the Ram 1500 walked away from its fellow finalists, the Mazda CX-5 and Ford C-Max. For you trivia buffs out there, we’ll save you the trip to Google: The Ram 1500 last won the coveted award in 1994 when it debuted with the iconic styling still in place today.
Big Ol’ Honking Pickup Truck
We tried to lead with something more insightful, but that is pretty much the best way to describe the third-generation Toyota Tundra. It’s big. Very big. Every aspect of it seems purposely designed to out-scale the domestic competition once and for all. In fact, I don’t think the pictures do it justice (and I took the pictures!) It almost has the look and feel of a three-quarter-ton Ford Super Duty. It’s as if Toyota overshot the half-ton class and landed in a five-eighths-ton class of one. Clearly this Tundra makes up for Toyota’s last two half-hearted foray’s into the full-size pickup realm with girth to spare. But there is more to being a successful pickup truck than size. The Best Gets Even Better
Alas, our number finally came up for a chance to have a go at the latest edition of Ford’s top seller, the F-150. Upon taking delivery of our well broken in pre-production model Lariat SuperCrew 4×4 we promptly declared that this truck was huge and got the most obvious part of our evaluation done.
