NAIAS 2011: 2012 BMW 6-Series Convertible

Late in the summer of 2010 BMW teased the automotive world with photos of their 6 Series Coupe Concept. Today, BMW made the unusual move of introducing the production 6 Series convertible without having officially shown us the production coupe first. Regardless of the semantics, BMW was willing to divulge just a few of the juicy details on their newest model.
The 6 Series convertible will be officially designated the 2012 650i and offer a 400 hp V8. This engine features BMW’s TwinPower Turbo with direct fuel injection. Though BMW was not forthcoming with acceleration figures, the time to retract the soft top was revealed to be 19 seconds. Also revealed was the car’s staggering $91,375 starting price. Just to put that price in perspective, BMW revealed the price of the 1 Series M coupe to be $47,010 and the 128i convertible to be $37,475. So for the price of a single 650i convertible one could purchase the hotly sought after 1 Series M for the track and the 128i for fun in the sun convertible and still have $6,890 left over for several years’ worth of fuel. Surely BMW won’t mind if we publish such tips if it encourages someone to buy two of their products rather than just one.
