2015 NAIAS: 2016 Jaguar XE

January 18th, 2015 No comments

The last time Jaguar offered a compact sport sedan it was dubbed X-type. Banish any thoughts of that all-wheel drive only sedan, which featured retro styling and take a look at Jaguar’s new 2016 XE. This sedan sports modern rear-wheel drive proportions with taut athletic styling. Aimed at German rivals such as the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-class, this all new Jag features lightweight aluminum architecture and nearly 50:50 weight distribution. Offered with rear-wheel drive and AWD, initially the car will utilize the marque’s existing supercharged 3-liter V6, which produces 340 hp. and 332 ft-lbs of torque, which should be good for a run to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. There’s no evidence that the XE will offer a manual transmission, but it will offer an 8-speed automatic with Jaguar’s signature retractable rotary shifter. Enthusiasts won’t be able to help but notice that the same engine is offered in the F-type with a manual transmission, so we can hope Jaguar will give buyers the luxury of choice in the way they shift their transmissions. For now, we wait with anticipation to see just how good this promising sedan is.

2011 Jaguar XJL

More Than Just A Pretty Face

The XJ hasn’t been a contender for years. Even when the last generation stepped forward with advanced aluminum intensive construction for the 2004 model year, a ho-hum base engine, tired styling and uninspired interior guaranteed it would never light up the radar of discriminating luxury sedan buyers. The XJ’s disastrous reception forced Jaguar management to sever its retro stranglehold and turn to maestro of design Ian Callum to develop a modern design language, which we first saw on the svelte, but still traditional, XF. For the flagship XJ Callum pushes the envelope even further and blesses the big cat with a distinctive presence that we think will finally draw curious consumers to Jaguar showrooms. After a week with a long-wheelbase XJ we’re confident they’re going to like what they find. Read more…

2010 Jaguar XJL (Design Critique)

December 30th, 2010 No comments

After nearly two decades of unprofitableness under the ownership of Ford, Jaguar management has been quite eager to re-establish the British brand as a viable automaker. Jaguars have long been considered beautiful cars, but somehow that has failed to make them sell in volumes that would make the brand profitable. Starting with the XF, Jaguar has attempted to bring some modern shapes and designs into the fold, abandoning the overtly classic looking S-type and XJ sedans. The new XJ and XJL are an even greater departure from classic Jaguar sedans. Where the XF was a departure for Jaguar, it would have been a controversial design for any automaker due to its unconventionally styled D-pillar. It is a shame that the designers felt compelled to push the boundaries of automotive design, because the rest of the XJ design seems to work quite well. AT’s Photo Spotlight

We took the 2007 Jaguar XK for a road trip to Warsaw, Indiana of all places and found that Coventry’s two-door kitten is a pleasant cruiser for two. Even with only 300-hp under the bonnet this aluminum bodied touring car will do naught to 60 in 5.9 seconds.

2007 Jaguar XK Coupe

Nearly Puuurfect

Forgive the corny subtitle but it accurately sums up our feelings for the completely redesigned and sexy-as-ever XK Coupe. In fact, Coventry’s latest cat melted our cold, cold hearts so much if we picked a Car of the Year there’s no doubt the XK would be a strong contender. Sure its annual production is about one zillionth of Camry sales, but no Toyota looks like this or sounds so glorious. Read more…

Ever wonder what it’s like to be royalty?
It’s hard to imagine that kind of life — living in an opulent palace, having a courtly staff catering to your every whim, mingling with the world’s finest people, fending off the paparazzi and having your most embarrassing moments show up at the supermarket check-out line. Read more…

2005 Jaguar S-Type

February 16th, 2010 No comments

When a car looks as good as the Jaguar S-Type, even the smallest hint of a styling change can be scary.
That’s why I didn’t know what to expect from the latest S-Type, which was freshened for the 2005 model year. Sandwiched neatly in Jaguar’s sedan lineup between the low-end X-Type and high-end XJ, the svelte S-Type has arguably been the company’s best looking car since it was introduced in 1999. Read more…
